Admiral Jonathan Archer sat in a chair to the side of the room, watching the excited crowds of people milling around the reception hall. Tomorrow, StarFleet's newest deep space exploration ship, the Enterprise NCC-1701 would set out on its first five year mission under the command of Captain Robert April. He'd been invited as a sort of dignitary, though he felt more like an old statue they'd gotten out of the closet and dusted off for the event. Malcolm had told him that morning that he was a legend and people never quite knew how to talk to legends. He's answered that if they had been there during his first First Contacts, they wouldn't be nearly as impressed.

Malcolm was here somewhere talking to some person or another, but Jonathan had opted to take a seat, feeling all of his hundred plus years quite keenly. He supposed some people might be embarrassed to see the old man, the legend of the 22nd Century, sitting quietly out of the way, but he didn't care. Let them live as long as he had and see if they didn't need to have a seat now and again.

He caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of his eye just a moment before Admiral Pennybaker stepped close to his chair, a trio of other people in his wake. Jonathan sighed inwardly and slowly got to his feet. For several hours now, he had been introduced to one person after another that would be going on into space, would be getting to live out their dreams, the same dream he'd once had. Time was moving on and Jonathan was being left behind, had already been left behind. He sighed. In truth, he did enjoy meeting new people and he certainly felt honored to be present as another piece of Starfleet and Federation history took place, especially one which was connected to memories of his own beloved Enterprise, but honestly, what he really wanted now was to gather Malcolm up and go home.

"Admiral Archer," Pennybaker greeted him. "I'd like to introduce you to the newest Vulcan ambassador to Earth and his family." He gestured behind him and a stern looking Vulcan came forward. Dozens of memories of T'Pol came to the front of his mind, making him smile in spite of himself. He would have never guessed growing up that seeing Vulcans would warm his heart so much. He must really be feeling his age today. "This is Ambassador Sarek, his wife Amanda and their son, Spock."

Sarek held his hand up in the traditional Vulcan salute and greeted him with a typical Vulcan saying, but Jonathan almost didn't catch it. He was too busy being surprised by the ambassador's wife, a lovely blond woman who was very clearly human. He managed to growl out an appropriate greeting, though he didn't bother trying to force his arthritic fingers into the salute. Sarek nodded his acceptance of the greeting and let his wife step forward.

"It's an honor to meet you, sir. My father used to speak of you in such glowing terms. I believe you were quite a hero to him." Jonathan smiled. It wasn't the first time he'd been told that, but it still made him blush slightly.

"Thank you," he rasped out. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well." He clasped her outstretched hand before turning his gaze on their young son. He too stepped forward, with seeming confidence and gave a traditional Vulcan greeting. But that didn't stop from Jonathan noticing just a flicker of emotion from deep within the young man's eyes, something almost akin to excitement. That confirmed for Jonathan a question he'd been pondering since meeting Sarek's human wife. This child wasn't from a previous marriage. He really was half human and half Vulcan. Other memories swept to the front of his mind. Painful memories. The image of Trip's devastated face as he watched his young daughter Elizabeth die, a flaw in her genetic makeup making her life impossible. Jonathan managed to keep the pain from showing on his face, but it was a close thing. Even after all these years, it was still hard to think about Trip.

"It's very good to meet you, son," he said, laying a hand on Spock's shoulder. Surprise flitted across his face for just a moment before being replaced with the usual Vulcan calm. Jonathan hoped he wouldn't always stamp out his emotions.

A thought occurred to him then and suddenly the pain dimmed, retreating back into the depths of his heart where it had always lived. He had come here to see the future of Starfleet. But it wasn't in a ship. It was right here in this boy, in this perfect blending of two alien cultures. Elizabeth had died, but this boy would live and prosper and so would Starfleet and the Federation.

"Yes, very good to meet you," he murmured. They spoke for a few moments more before moving on to the next dignitary. Jonathan thought about sitting back down, but decided against it. It was time to leave. It was time to get his husband and go home and let the future go on without him. Perhaps he wouldn't have been happy about it that morning, but now, well, now he felt just fine about it.
