"Hello? I'm home!"

Jonathan Archer stepped through the front door of the apartment he shared with Malcolm Reed. He'd been gone almost the entire day at work, his regular shift spilling over into the evening hours as he worked on two or three important trade negotiations. He knew that Malcolm and Trip had planned to spend the day together in town as it was the weekend and neither of them had had to work that day.

Dirty bastards, he thought to himself before calling out again. "Anyone here?" He would have thought they'd have been back by now. It was starting to get quite late. He walked through the kitchen and into the living room, still calling out now and again, though by this time he'd realized they weren't there yet. He couldn't help but be a little disappointed. It had been a long day at work and he had been hoping to relax into the sofa with Malcolm by his side and maybe watch a vid.

He finally gave up on calling out for people once he reached the living room and flopped onto the sofa. He stared around the room for a minute, trying decide what to do with himself when he noticed a little box in the corner than hadn't been there that morning. There was nothing written on the side of it and nothing about it to really indicate it's purpose, though Jonathan noticed it had no lid. Curiosity spurred him to push himself off the sofa and walk towards it, but he had barely started when it emitted a faint yawn and began to shake slightly. He stopped abruptly, his heart beating wildly with surprise. A second later, a tiny bark floated out of the top of the box and into Jonathan's ears.

That was all the encouragement he needed. He sprinted to the box and peered into it. Large brown eyes peered back at him and Jonathan could swear he heard his heart melting. There in the box, with a red ribbon tied around his neck, was a very small Chocolate Labrador puppy. Jonathan immediately scooped him up and buried his face in his soft fur, inhaling that unique puppy smell he hadn't experienced for so long. The little dog began to lick his face and Jonathan laughed. It had been too long since he'd cuddled a dog in his arms, far too long. Porthos had died of old age nearly a year ago and although Jonathan had agreed to Malcolm's suggestion that they get a new pet, he hadn't been able to bring himself to go to the pet store and pick out what would, in essence, be Porthos' replacement. It looked like Malcolm had taken the initiative.

He sat back on the sofa with the puppy, running his fingers through the brown fur as the little dog fell back into a deep sleep. Moments later, he heard a clatter coming from the back door and soon enough, Trip and Malcolm stood in the doorway of the living room, their faces and hands smudged with dirt. Jonathan put a finger up to his lips and both men tiptoed into the room.

"Hello," Malcolm whispered before leaning over to plant a small kiss on Jonathan's lips. "I didn't know you were home yet or I would have come in sooner. Trip and I were building a dog house in the back." Jonathan just nodded and continued to stroke the dog. Trip sat on the coffee table and reached out to run his own hand through the dog's coat.

"I hope you aren't too mad at us for jumpin' the gun, Jonny," he said. "We just figured it might be easier if we brought him home for you." His apologetic face suggested that they had been worried that Jonathan would be angry with them for getting the dog without him. But he wasn't. Not at all actually. Not only would it have been too hard, he knew he would have wanted to bring home all the dogs and that wouldn't do. Besides, he'd already fallen in love with the little bundle asleep on his chest.

"I'm not. He's perfect. Thank you," he said, first looking at Trip and then at Malcolm, who had placed a hand on his neck and started rubbing a thumb over his skin.

"You're welcome, love," Malcolm replied. Jonathan realized then that this puppy was the first pet he and Malcolm would share completely, raising him from a baby. He hugged the dog closer to his chest and sighed.

"Just perfect," he murmured.
