I love Jensen. I love Misha. But I don't know them. Or their families. So I made families up. I hope that doesn't jar people too much, but if it does, perhaps you missed the part of this where this is a total AU?

"What are you doing?"

Jensen doesn't look up. One false move and he could ruin at least ten minutes of careful work. He circles the edge of his scissors around a slender tip of brown construction paper.

"Making hand turkeys," he says, his voice muffled as he chews lightly on the side of his tongue.

A shadow falls across his desk.

"Hand turkeys?"

Misha picks up a completed turkey to examine. It's a perfect outline of Jensen's hand. The four fingers are covered in reds and yellows and on the thumb, Jensen's attached a small construction paper beak. Misha doesn't say anything as Jensen rounds the scissors around the wrist of the turkey, where the little construction paper feet will go. When he finally looks up, it's to see Misha biting his bottom lip, obviously trying not to laugh.

"What?"

He waves the turkey through the air.

"Hand turkeys," he repeats.

Jensen scowls and snatches the turkey from him.

"These are awesome. My teachers used to make them all the time."

"Right," Misha says, sitting in the chair beside Jensen's desk. "That was before kids smuggled their cell phones and iPods into school."

"So what? I should just get them to download a hand turkey app? Kids like simple things," Jensen declares, indignation swelling in his chest. And not just because of the slight against his badass army of hand turkeys. Jensen hates the idea of losing kids' imaginations down the drains of technology. "You'd be surprised. Alona's gonna have them make some kind of turkey art thing and they always love that-"

The smile's been growing on Misha's face during the entirety of Jensen's rant. That is enough to make him suspicious and then Jensen remembers just who he's talking to.

"Wait a second, you're the guy who was teaching them to play blocks or something the other day! You've got no room to talk about technology."

"I know." Misha plucks the turkey back out of Jensen's hand. "I love your horde of paper turkeys. I just like seeing you get annoyed."

Jensen huffs.

"Ass."

"Yes," Misha agrees.

"What are you doing here anyway?"

"I wanted to see if you needed a ride, but I can see you're busy cooking," Misha says, his eyes on Jensen's pile of unfinished turkeys and untouched construction paper.

"You know what would make this go faster?"

"What's that?"

Jensen slaps a piece of brown paper on the desk in front of Misha and then hands him a pencil.

"Variety is the spice of life," he says. "You can make me some skinny turkeys."

"My hands aren't skinny," Misha protests, but Jensen just rolls his eyes and doesn't even dignify the lie with a response. "Well, you like my skinny hands," Misha says instead, always ready to turn a potential insult into something awesome about himself.

"Uh huh," is Jensen's vague response, his mind already back on finishing the turkeys he's already cut out. He hears Misha begin to draw on the paper. They settle into a comfortable working silence, interrupted every now and again by some question or inane comment. Misha's suggestion that they get Jared to come add some linebacker turkeys to the mix makes Jensen seriously consider calling Jared's classroom to see if he's still around. But then he decides he enjoys being alone with Misha too much to bother.

"How many of these things are we making anyway?" Misha asks as he hands Jensen another cut-out.

"Actually, this should be good enough," Jensen answers, silently counting up his supply of turkeys. "I don't want to darken the walls with them or anything. Just enough to get the message across the Thanksgiving is coming up."

"Because otherwise the children will forget those three days off school."

"I want to be festive, damnit, so shut your trap," Jensen says and then to ensure Misha's silence, he curls his fingers around the collar of Misha's shirt and pulls him in for a kiss. A quick kiss because there are enough teachers wandering the halls after school to chance an awkward encounter if one should walk in on them kissing.

"Far be it from me to ruin the Thanksgiving spirit," Misha says. There's a slightly dazed look in his eyes that Jensen loves knowing he put there.

"That reminds me. I keep meaning to ask you, what are you doing for Thanksgiving?"

Jensen knows Misha's parents still live in the town in Massachusetts where Misha grew up. He'd assumed he would spend the holiday with them because Misha always speaks fondly of them, but truth be told, their relationship is new enough that Jensen can't be sure. It's one of the reasons he keeps forgetting to ask Misha about it. Their relationship is also too new to think of bringing each other home to family. Even though Jensen's pretty sure he's going to miss the hell out of Misha over both Thanksgiving and Christmas. He's hoping they can at least plan on spending New Year's Eve together.

"Nothing really," he says, surprising Jensen.

"You're not...I thought you might go home..." he says tentatively. Misha's not the type to lash out, but he's also still something of a mystery. Jensen hopes he hasn't stumbled onto some hidden sore point involving Misha's family.

"Normally I would," Misha says, his focus on the beak he's gluing to his latest turkey. "But my parents decided to visit my sister in Germany this year. She can't make it back for Christmas, so this is their chance to see her. Plus she was bitching about missing American Thanksgiving," he adds with a fond smile. "Anyway, my brother is going to his wife's family, so I decided just to stay here."

He knows Misha's sister is doing some kind of study abroad program in Germany and that Misha misses her more than he lets on. It's too bad that a trip to Germany and back would be too much for the few days the teachers get off. Jensen wonders if maybe Misha should go see her over Christmas.

"That sounds fun. Have they ever been to Germany?" he asks.

They chat about Germany and Misha's family until they finish every last turkey. It’s clear from the memories of the holidays that Misha shares, a wide grin on his face and his blue eyes alit with good humor, that he enjoys being with them as much as Jensen enjoys being with his own family.

"What about you?" Misha asks as Jensen gazes around his classroom, trying to decide which locations are prime turkey real estate.

"What about me what?"

"What are you doing for Thanksgiving?"

In his mind's eye, Jensen sees a very familiar scene. His childhood home, decorated in the same colors as these turkeys, the spicy scent of autumn permeating the house. His father and sisters fighting about the best way to create pie crusts while his mother quietly makes them behind their backs. Jensen catching his brother's eye and nodding towards the basement door where they can escape to play Nintendo until the cooking is done. His swarm of nieces and nephews climbing over him and dragging him down to the floor for an epic tickle match.

He thinks about hugging his mom like he hasn't had the chance to do since the 4th of July. He thinks of the unending questions when his siblings find out he's seeing a new guy and of letting his dad lecture him about how to save money on home maintenance.

He thinks about the round trip tickets to Dallas in his desk drawer.

And then he thinks about Misha sitting in his apartment on Thanksgiving Day, alone with who knows what to eat and parades playing on the television.

"I was just going to stay here this year," he lies easily.

Misha's eyebrows lift slightly.

"Yeah?" He hands Jensen a piece of tape. "Thought you'd have a big Walton’s-style Thanksgiving planned."

"Eh," Jensen says with a shrug. "It's kind of an exhausting trip for just two days at home. I'm going home for Christmas. There's no reason to do it twice in a month."

"Uh huh," Misha says, sounding unconvinced.

"Do you want to...I mean, we could have dinner together that day, if you want," Jensen says, keeping his eyes firmly on the turkey he's taping to the wall. For some reason, this invitation suddenly feels very important. Like it officially makes their relationship more than just a flirtation and great kissing. Jensen feels like he's really inviting Misha into his life.

"Not real Thanksgiving dinner," he babbles quickly, now afraid of Misha's answer. "Unless you want to cook it because I can barely boil water. Or we could have pathetic Chinese food Thanksgiving. Or whatever-"

Misha turns him and kisses him soundly on the mouth. The turkey he's holding falls away, completely forgotten in favor of wrapping his arms around Misha's shoulders and the other teachers be damned. Jensen stands in his empty classroom and kisses the hell out of his boyfriend.

"I thought I'd save you from yourself," Misha says sometime later and it's not fair that he can sound so alert and amused when Jensen's mind is hazy with pleasure.

"Huh?"

"Yes." Misha kisses him softly. "We can have Thanksgiving together."

"Oh." Sudden excitement zings under Jensen's skin. "Oh!"

In his surprising happiness, Jensen hugs Misha so enthusiastically that he lifts him slightly off the ground and he kisses him again. It doesn't matter that he's missing spending this time he loves so well with his family or that said family is going to read a lot into his decision to stay home. Because Jensen asked Misha into his life and Misha said yes.

"I had no idea you liked Thanksgiving that much," Misha says, his back pressed hard against the wall, voice finally breathy and distracted.

"Right, Thanksgiving," Jensen mutters before leaning into another kiss.

They don't get the hand turkeys taped up until much later.

I still make at least one hand turkey on Thanksgiving. Some traditions shouldn't die out, if you ask me.

Also, Jensen, that was totally slick!

...we make hand turkeys in my college dorm. I love them. And then we hang them on the windows in the lounge.

And I love this series. Normally, I'm not really one for AU school fic, but damn, you're making me like it.

[identity profile] cloudyjenn.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's been too long since I made one. I need to do it this time around for sure now.

And yaye! I adore a good school AU, so if I can change a mind about it even a teensy bit, that pleases me!

Thanks for reading!

[identity profile] cloudyjenn.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I just hope they ate cranberry sauce shaped like a can. That's the most important element of any Thanksgiving.

Thank you!

Being English, I don't really know anything about thanksgiving, other than that turkeys feature prominently... But I absolutely adored this, and I got real warm fuzzies both when Jensen was thinking of his family thanksgiving, and the potential one he could have with Misha :) so thank you!

[identity profile] cloudyjenn.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome! I'm crazy for Thanksgiving, so a lot of my love for it was here in Jensen's character. If I gave up my family Thanksgiving for someone, it could only be love! :)

Thanks!

I really, really love these fics! Every single one makes me happy, and this one is no exception. The linebacker hand turkey idea made me laugh! I love how well Misha and Jensen fit together in these, how good they feel.

Aw, yaye! I'm so glad they make you happy! :) Maybe next year, they'll get Jared to contribute some bigass turkeys to scare the children. We can only hope.
