Summary: Snape and Lupin get married, yaye!
Author's Notes: This is my story for the HP Slash Wedding Ficathon. I hope it's not too fluffy. Being that it's a wedding, there might be a little fluff, I'm not sure. I tried to keep it out as much as possible! Also, I wasn't sure what Alphonsus or Nasturtia meant, but it sounded gossipy, so I included a little gossip in it. I hope it's to your liking!
Challenge:lj name: _peapod
requested couple: snape/anybody
3 things you want to read: drunken muggle relatives, exploding wedding
cakes, what their alphonsus said about our nasturtia
3 things you don't want to read: schmoop and fluff (yeah, i know)
“Professor Lupin? Are you serious?” The blond seventh year gasped. Her friend, a chubby little brunette nodded enthusiastically, looking smug.
“Yes,” she whispered conspiratorially. “I heard they’re going to be married after school ends. Professor Snape married, can you believe it?” She sounded distinctly disgusted.
“If either one of you wish to pass this year, I suggest you take your gossip and go back to your dormitory immediately.”
The two girls whipped their heads around in a rather comical fashion. Their eyes widened in fear as they realized that the subject of their gossip was standing right behind them.
“So sorry, Professor,” the chubby one squeaked. They both ran in directions that Snape knew didn’t lead to any dormitory, but he didn’t care. Just as long as they weren’t out in the open, talking about something they knew nothing about.
Or rather, something they did know about. Snape sighed. The truth was was that Remus had proposed to him a few weeks ago and Snape had reluctantly said yes. It wasn’t that he didn’t love Remus. Just the opposite. In fact, he had never loved anyone more completely. But he was afraid of losing that strange comfortable feeling that existed between the two men. Marriages never worked. They only did for couples like Arthur and Molly Weasley because Arthur was completely downtrodden. Snape knew that would never happen to him and he wasn’t interested in seeing it happen to Lupin.
And so, Snape made the choice earlier that same day to tell Remus that they should call off the wedding. Remus was back in England after being abroad working for the Order and was coming to stay with Snape. He would have to tell him that very night.
********************************************************************************
“I particularly missed you on the day I spent sleeping in a ditch on the side of the road. Or rather, I missed your large four poster bed. Honestly, Severus, it was one of the worst nights of my life. I did, however, have a lovely dream about you that involved silk sheets and chocolate cake. It’s hard being uncomfortable, hungry and horny at the same time.” Remus leaned in for yet another kiss and Snape gladly allowed it. Anything to give him more time.
Remus pulled back after a few moments and sighed. He propped his aching feet up onto the table in front of Snape’s settee. “How have you been, darling? Haven’t murdered any of your students while I was away, have you?”
Snape smiled slightly. In fact, there had been several instances where Snape nearly pulled his wand on one of his students, but Remus didn’t need to know that. He seemed to care more for student’s personal health than Snape thought was normal.
“I’ve been fine, I suppose. A bit lonely.” That last part came out with some difficulty. Snape didn’t have Remus’ knack for saying personal and emotional things. But he was getting better.
Neither of them spoke for several moments as they sat in front of a large fire, enjoying it’s merry glow. Snape knew the moment was approaching and the tension he felt became nearly unbearable. He began to fidget slightly and ran his fingers through his dark hair once or twice. This did not escape Remus’ notice, who had come to learn the signals of Snape’s moods quite well in the last few years.
“Severus? Are you quite well?” Remus took Snape’s hand and began to caress it gently. Snape stood suddenly and crossed over to the mantle of his fireplace. He leaned on it heavily. Remus smiled at the romantic image that Snape unknowingly created of a tall dark figure casting a flickering shadow on the far wall. He almost told him this when Snape suddenly turned and gave him a rather desperate look. The comment died in his throat.
“Severus, what on earth is the matter?”
Snape sighed.
“Remus, it’s just. Well, you see…” Drat, this was harder than he thought it was going to be. He certainly hoped Remus wouldn’t cry.
“Wha..”
“Remus, I can’t marry you.” Snape fairly blurted this out. Remus went very still. He didn’t burst into tears, but then he didn’t move either and Snape didn’t know which was worse. Several moments passed in tense silence.
“Well?”
Remus looked up at him with sad empty eyes. “What do you want me to say? I wondered if it was only a matter of time before you stopped loving me.”
Severus felt a flash of anger. “What’s that supposed to mean?” he demanded. Remus leaped out of his chair.
“Oh Severus, come on. We spent our childhoods hating each other. Tell me, would you even want to be in the same room as me if it weren’t for that accursed war?” Remus’ usually pale face flushed a deep crimson.
Snape sneered at Remus for the first time since they became lovers. “I’m so happy I’ve given you an opportunity to get that off your chest!” He shouted and felt a kind of despair overwhelm him. This marriage business was already ruining things.
Both men stood glaring at each other, breathing harshly. Despite his anger, Snape couldn’t help but notice how lovely Remus’ eyes looked when they were brightened by emotion. This realization softened Snape slightly and he walked over to the settee and flopped onto it. Remus hesitated before joining him, though he did not sit right next to him. Those simple five inches pained Severus more than he could say.
“Severus, I…” Remus swallowed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t even ask you why. That’s no way to treat someone you love.”
Snape, who hadn’t quite learned to put away his more base feelings, felt a surge of vindication.
“No, you didn’t.” It slipped out. Snape bit the inside of his mouth and began again. “How could you imply that I don’t really love you? Who cares why we’re together? We’re together aren’t we?” Remus opened his mouth to say something, but Snape continued before he could. “I love you more now than ever before and that’s why I can’t marry you.”
Remus raised his eyebrows. “Excuse me? Could you explain the semantics of that argument please?”
Snape always wanted to punch Remus when he directed that sarcastic tone towards him. “I’ll tell you, you smarmy bastard.” Remus smiled in spite of himself and Snape felt most of the tension drain out of the room.
“Go ahead, slimy git.” Those little nicknames that couples call each other are so endearing.
“First, let’s close the space between us.” Snape moved closer to Remus and took one of the other man’s hands into both of his. “I’m just worried that this marriage will cause more fights like this one.”
Remus looked confused. “Severus, not marrying caused this fight.”
Snape just looked at him. “Remus, you know what I mean. Marriage so seldom works. I’m just afraid that we’ll end up like some disgusting couple that nitpick at each other and end up beating each other to death.”
“Are you afraid that I am going to start beating you?”
“Remus, take me seriously. So many marriages fail. My parents, your parents…” He trailed off as a look of understanding seemed to pass over Remus’ face.
“What?” He asked sharply, annoyed at the feeling that Remus was looking through him.
“Severus, just because our parents’ marriages broke up, doesn’t mean that ours will. Yours broke up because your father was heartless prick,” Severus agreed with statement, of course, but he still felt the urge to deck Remus, “and mine because my Muggle mother was unable to overcome the constant jealously she felt at my father’s talents.”
Severus’ mouth fell open slightly at this last statement. He had never heard Remus say this was the reason that his parents ended their young marriage. Remus nodded, even though Snape hadn’t said anything.
“It’s true. I didn’t realize it when I was younger and it wasn’t until I became a man that I realized how hard it must be for half and half couples. But Severus, we have nothing like that. We’re both magical, we’re both teachers and we both went through the same war.” His voice hitched slightly. “Lost the same people.”
Severus gathered Remus into his arms and hugged him tightly. The two had become friends after Sirius’ death and that particular tragedy was the only one they didn’t share completely.
“The only thing that will ruin this marriage is we lose faith in each other.” Remus said over Snape’s shoulder. Snape understood the unspoken message. They had lost faith in each other today. As they hugged and caressed one another, Snape became aware that a small rip had developed in their relationship because of this lapse of faith. He pulled back from Remus and searched his light blue eyes.
“You feel it too?”
Remus nodded. "Don't lose faith in us, Severus." They shared a soft, lingering kiss.
“Now look at me.” Remus lifted up Snape’s chin gently. “I want to be married to you. I don’t want to worry about gossip or strange looks when I stay in your rooms. I want you to belong to me in every way possible.”
Normally, Snape would buck against giving charge of any part of his life to someone else, but he found that proclaimation undeniably appealing and very arousing.
“Can you give that to me?”
Severus nodded slowly.
“Will you?”
“Yes.”
The rest of the evening passed far more pleasantly than the first part had.
********************************************************************************
The next few months passed in a whirl. Severus discovered how deep his desire to proclaim to the world his commitment to Remus really was and positively threw himself into the preparations for the wedding. It was to be held in the house that Remus had recently inherited from his deceased father. The house itself was smallish, but there was a large backyard area that would be perfect for the ceremony and reception. And besides, they had only invited their close friends and family members. Before either felt quite prepared, the day of the wedding arrived.
The morning of July 25th dawned hot and bright. The couple had chosen that date because it was the first time they admitted their growing love for one another. And now they could do it again in front of their friends and family.
“Severus?” Snape turned away from the mirror where he had been finishing arranging his dress robes.
“Are you ready?” It was Harry Potter. Snape resisted the urge to roll his eyes. He still didn’t quite like the little “hero”, but as he was serving as Remus’ best man, he decided to tolerate him as best he could for the day.
“Yes. Is Remus?”
The younger man nodded. “He’s already out there. I’m going to get in my place. Good luck!” Potter flounced out the door. Snape shook his head in exasperation. He wished that Potter would stop being nice to him. It made the comfortable dislike they felt for each other harder to maintain.
Snape stepped out of the small comfortable bedroom that Remus and he had shared the night before and took a deep breath. Soon, he would be married to Remus Lupin. An overwhelming sense of unreality swept over him. What a lovely feeling it was.
********************************************************************************
“It was a lovely service I thought. Especially the magical binding. I’ve never been to a magical wedding before, but of course, I’ve read all about them. That seal means that they are more deeply connected than they would be if they had done a Muggle wedding.”
Snape cringed. Of course Hermione Granger would find a way to drive him crazy at his own wedding. He leaned back to look past Remus. The insufferable girl was chatting with Remus’ Aunt Letha, a small Muggle woman who had looked confused during the entire service. Severus couldn't decide if it was because she wasn’t used to magical people or because she hadn’t realized that her nephew was marrying a man or if it was simply because she looked to be about 900 years old. He looked closer at the elderly lady. Now she just looked to be rather drunk. Good on her. Being drunk was as good a way as any to withstand the conversing skills of Granger.
Remus noticed Snape glancing over his shoulder and turned towards the two women. He smiled slightly and coughed to cover a chuckle.
“I couldn’t think of anyone better to sit with Aunt Letha than Hermione Granger. I’m not sure anyone else would sit through the conversations that Aunt starts. She generally spends most family functions getting pissed and telling us about the time she was abducted by aliens. When my mother told her that she married a wizard, she called our house for days on end, trying to figure out if it had anything to do with magic.”
Snape smiled back at him and buried his face in Remus’ shoulder. He didn’t know how he was going to get through this event when all he wanted to do was relieve Remus of his lovely dress robes and begin the honeymoon.
Remus kissed the top of Snape’s head and whispered. “Just a few more moments, my love. I think we have cut the cake and make a toast and then we can slip away gracefully.”
Snape sighed into Remus’ neck, causing several locks of Remus’ brown hair to twirl around. “Can’t we just curse them all and leave?”
“As much as I would like that, I don’t think we should go on our honeymoon with mass murder hanging over us.”
Snape had a witty reply for this, but was interrupted by a loud, annoying voice.
“Oi! Everyone! The cake is here.”
It was one half of the excruciating Weasley twins. Having the flamboyant redhead (Snape had absolutely no idea which one it was) introduce the arrival of the cake put Snape on edge. This couldn’t be good.
“This beautiful cake was made especial by very own Mum because she loves Remus Lupin so very much. And doesn’t hate Severus Snape too much.” The plump matron of the Weasley clan swatted at her son. God, will this never end, Severus thought.
The Weasley Twin ignored his mother and continued, “Would the groom and..ah, groom, please come forward to cut the cake?” He then scooted quickly away from the cake, a smile playing around his lips as he did so. Remus stood and began to walk over to the cake, but Snape held him back.
“Hold on.” Snape cast a quick revealing spell on the cake. If his suspicions were wrong, the spell would be harmless. If not, then any spells put on it would become apparent.
The cake exploded. Everything seemed to slow in Snape’s mind as slabs of white flour cake and cups of icing covered the crowd. He saw a splatter of it reach the Weasley Twin before he reached the door he ran towards and that, at least, made him happy. One of the small men that had stood atop the cake landed at Remus’ feet. Both men watched its descent, then looked at each other. Remus’s face broke into a huge grin and he wrapped his icing covered arms around Snape’s waist.
“Aren’t you glad we did this, my love?”
Snape grimaced. “Oh yes, pure joy, this.”
Remus let out a peal of laughter that didn’t stop till Snape pulled him close for a deep satisfying kiss. It was their first real kiss of their marriage and with it Snape felt the rip in their relationship begin to heal.
