Summary: Castiel worries that Dean is having bad dreams.
Author's Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic. Prompt was "Supernatural, Dean/Castiel, clenching fists in the sheets."

He knows he shouldn't be watching again. Not because God forbids it, but because Dean always seems so upset when he awakens to find Castiel sitting on the edge of his bed. The things that anger humans thoroughly bewilder Castiel. Dean barely flinches when Castiel confronts him about any of his many sins, but shouts so loud Castiel fears for his vocal chords the one time Castiel sits on the hood of Dean's car. Watching Dean sleep is a lesser crime, Castial suspects, but still something that makes Dean distinctly uncomfortable.

Yet he can't force himself away. Not when Dean moans low in the back of his throat and slowly thrashes his body back and forth until the blankets fall away, slipping to the floor with a soft thump. Dean's dreams must be very unpleasant tonight, Castiel thinks and he can't decide whether to enter Dean's mind and soothe his nightmares or not. The invasion of privacy will disturb Dean, but surely, he will forgive Castiel if he is able to sleep peacefully. Castiel watches for a moment more, unused to his indecisiveness.

Then Dean's lips part and he draws in a ragged breath.

"Cas," he sighs, pressing his cheek into his pillow as he pants. Castiel's concern spikes. A movement catches his eye and he sees that Dean's fingers are grasping at his bed sheets, clenching the white material into his fists. "Oh god, Cas..."

It's enough to spur Castiel into action. Dean is afraid and is calling for his help. He solves the dilemma of whether to invade Dean's dreams by simply curling his fingers around Dean's shoulders and shaking him awake.

"Dean," he says. "Wake up, Dean."

Another soft groan escapes Dean's mouth and his body moves oddly in Castiel's arms, almost like a liquid that surges against Castiel's body. He rubs his chest and hips against Castiel just as his eyes blink open. They stare into Castiel's, puzzled and then snap wide.

"Cas, what the hell are you doing?"

"You were having a nightmare," Castiel informs him.

"Nightmare...what the-" Dean pushes him away with great force and paws at the bed, searching till he finds the blanket abandoned on the floor and snatches it up, laying it across his lap. "Dude, get the hell out of here," he hisses and Castiel sighs.

Standing, he walks to the middle of the room, pausing a moment to make sure that Dean is alright. Dean hunches over the blanket, pressing it tightly into his lap, a scowl firmly set on his face and Castiel sighs again.

At this rate, he'll never understand humans.
